Whoopdie do.

So much has happened in the meantime, yet due to exams I havent been able to write anything about them. Elections, exams, exam results, after exam antics, PTM, the list goes on.

Post-exam periods are confusing times. After weeks of studying and studying, everyone is suddenly pulled out of their cocoon and left there, standing with a textbook in one hand, an utterly flummoxed look on their face, wondering "What the hell am I supposed to do now?"

The answer at first seems easy; Play your ***** ass off.

But after the initial week of mindless, endless and utterly consuming computer time and the occasional mahjong game thrown in, I'm still left lying on the sofa wondering whether there is anything left to do.

And then comes along the Parent Teacher Meeting. Oh joy.

PTM, probably one of the most terrible yet enjoyable events a youth goes through. This paradox is due to the two possible results that can ensure when your teacher finally meets the unfortunate pair whose offspring sits in his or her class with that stoned look on his face.

Outcome 1:

The teacher, tragically and most unfortunately, confirms your parents suspicions that their son is indeed a completely lazy, feckless layabout, who sleeps in class, has no potential whatsoever, is doomed to fail, socially inept, whose only possible future ends with mediocrity, self-destruction, and and ultimately death.

Outcome 2:

The teacher, surprisingly and thankfully, refutes your parents suspicions that their son is indeed a completely lazy, feckless layabout, who sleeps in class, has no potential whatsoever, is doomed to fail, socially inept, whose only possible future ends with mediocrity, self-destruction, and and ultimately death.

He or she goes on to say that you are indeed working hard, putting in effort, handing up homework and getting good grades, to which your parents will laugh lightly, and look at you suspiciously as if you somehow managed to bribe/blackmail your teacher into shamelessly praising you and that "we know what you're up to, you deceiving spawn".

Ahem.

Thankfully, that event is over, without too much damage, although through the recommendations of some teachers, I may spend the rest of my school years doing math exercises wherever I go. Oh, and reading Chinese stories too.

Oh well, life goes on. People live. People die. People sit around wondering what to do and end up taking a nap instead.

Raaaaaaaaaaaaaainbow.

Just some memories from Kluang, albeit some help with Microsoft Paint *cough*

Malaysia And Mahjong

Thanks to my recent trip to Malaysia, I am completely rested, rejuvenated, and addicted to mahjong.

Currently my head is still filled with the sounds of tiles being smacked together.

"PONG ARH!!!!"

Mahjong is fascinating. Somehow anything u do has great impact on your or another player's chances of victory. The possibilities are endless yet limited at the same time.

Well I've really enjoyed my latest trip to Malaysia, sadly, I have to get back to school and life in Singapore.

That being said, I'd like to say something for future reference.

Firstly and most importantly:

I am not an idiot.

When I have something serious to say about somebody, a person I know, I say it to their face.

Unless its a joke or a light-hearted comment, I say it to that person's face.

Secondly, I am not a complete fool. If I feel that someone is being treated undesirably, I don't say anything. Its up to that person to decide for him or herself what he wants to do about it. I keep my mouth shut but my eyes and ears open.

Thank you.

Keep that in mind now.

Rugby final tomorrow, hoping for a win so that we'll get a holiday......*please oh please*

Had an interesting discussion with Daryl, Mr Moghan and to a lesser extent, Harrison today in the Library.

We talked about religion and science, faith, odd religions, school, blogging, rugby etc, while Harrison sat next to us and looked at car magazines.

The conversation went on somewhat like this:

Daryl: *interesting insights and viewpoints etc etc*

Mr Moghan: *interesting stories about odd religions including one which worships a teapot*

GH: *extremely cynical viewpoints interrupted occasionally by random outburst about something completely unrelated*

Harrison: Fiat. Curiously though, even until now, he remains anonymous and in fact the incident has not even been acknowledged by the school.

In terms of punishment befitting the crime, I'd think that most people would agree with me that the rugby player probably deserves more punishment than the blogger. After all, his actions and school were published in the newspapers, and even now parents are outraged etc etc, over that particular incident.

Again, I must admit that we may not know the full circumstances of the rugby incident. He may have been provoked or it may have been a mistake. However, if that is the case, I'd think that the school should clarify any doubts and give an account of what happened from our team's viewpoint.

I mean, it is understandable if the reason the school had wished to keep the player's name anonymous was to prevent the media from publishing it. But I think that the school should at least explain the incident fully so that we at least have a clear picture of what happened.

Back in school, I politely (I hope) put this question to the two prefects that came to get our views for the student forum. The answer was less than satisfactory, but then again I presume that the prefects don't really know much more than we do.

Again, I'm not trying to be offensive, or disrespect anyone, I just feel that this a relevant question that needs to be answered.

Good luck with exam preparations all.

It occured to me that my self-esteem would improve had I not added a cbox to this blog.

I think I had something I wanted to say on this blog, but I was just stunned speechless by the fact that two girls sang a song to promote their cheese puffs to the tune of "My Humps".

So lets just discuss how our assemblies are getting more interesting.

Walking Away.

Night had fallen, and various people were walking the streets, eager to just go home and get some rest. The street buzzed with the sounds of cars, buses and motorcycles, while stone-faced people sat at bus stops, staring off into space.

A boy had been standing on the street for quite a while now. Just standing, staring off into the distance, gaze never wavering. The cars whizzed by him, ignoring this solitary figure at the side of the road.

After a while more, a man walked up to him.

"Hey you," he called.

The boy turned.

"You've been standing here for a long time you know, can I ask what are you looking at?"

The boy looked at him with a sad smile. He just looked at the stranger for a moment, then he spoke.

"I'm watching that group of students," he said, gesturing at a small crowd of teenagers walking towards the nearby MRT station, "our school sent us for a conference near here, and now its over."

"And why are you watching them?"

"Because they are together," The boy said wistfully, "because they came separately but they're leaving together." "Unlike me," he added as an afterthought.

"Then why don't you join them?"

"Because I don't know them. Because I'll just be walking near to them and not walking with them. Because the way to my home lies the other way," the boy jerked his head in the other direction.

"Then what happened to your friends?"

"They left."

"Oh."

"Its okay," he shrugged, "they have their own things to do."

He paused, "Only that I would have liked the company."

"I suppose...at least you can still go back to your family."

"I suppose....They went out for dinner, I told them not to wait up for me."

"Oh."

"Its okay," he shrugged again.

After a moment's pause, he continued, "Its just that I feel sorry."

"Sorry? For what?"

"Well," the boy paused.

"I'm sorry because as I stood here watching, I realised that at one point or more in my life, there has been someone who has been watching me, watching me walk away, surrounded by friends, while he or she stands there alone, just as I am now standing alone."

"........"

"And I also feel sad."

"Sad?"

"Sad. Because I have also realised that by the next time I have the privilege of leaving with my friends, the privilege of being able to exchange stories with someone as we walk towards a bus stop or MRT station, the privilege of talking and laughing with someone before the bus or MRT arrives..."

"By that time, I'll have forgotten about the time I stood there alone, the time I stood alone while everyone else walked away, and by that time, I will have forgotten the person who will be standing there alone as I walk away as well."

"I see."

"No, you don't."

"Perhaps."

The boy continued to stand there, until the students in the distance had disappeared. He then felt obliged to say something else.

"And what about you?"

Silence greeted him.

The boy turned.

The space where the man had been was empty, and once more the boy was alone at the the side of the road.

The boy sighed, and his gaze fell to his feet.

Abruptly, he turned and started to walk away, walking until he was sure that no one was around to see his face break.

Face Recognition

For all you people who may have been checking this site once in while, hoping to see an update, I apologize deeply.

Nevertheless I hope this posts makes up for it, or almost all of it.

Wait, what the heck am I saying?

IT WILL

Anyway, for people who aren't aware of MyHeritage, its this application that allows you to upload a picture and match it against celebrities online. Good hor?

So naturally, being the bo liao person that I am, I couldn't resist trying it out.

The following pictures just go to demonstrate why you should never let anyone take your picture and possibly put it online. EVER.

*dramatic music plays*

I started off with relatively harmless stuff. Ahem. Note the word "relatively"

First, up: Ryan, with this nice class photo that we took earlier.

Note the cool, stylistic, artistic er....nevermind.

You run a cross-check with the celebrity database and tadaaaa!

I say man! Somewhere.

After that, I just couldn't stop. Click here

4) That the names of a certain head librarian and assistant head prefect are also mentioned in the ACS(I) wiki entry *cough* *cough* . Click here

5) That you can learn fascinating stuff about Durians. Click here.

"In Thailand, durian-flavoured condoms used to be sold at 7-Eleven nationwide. Indonesia began selling durian-flavoured condoms in 2003. According to the director of DKT Indonesia, the country's leading condom distributor, the durian-flavoured condoms were sold about 150,000 pieces in the first week."

6) That Wikipedia is probably one of the best ways to kill time. Ever.

Holidays and Hangovers.

Holidays are always nice to have. Or as they prefer to be known, the Mothers Network, the Homemakers Network etc etc.

The Auntie Network is a powerful and extensive group of individuals around Singapore, obviously composed of middle-aged mothers in almost every household. These mothers are usually bound by a similar interest, such as children in the same school, church or tuition center. Collectively, they wield significant influence over the day-to-day affairs of students and education alike.

Most notably however, is their extensive access to information. In fact, the main function of the Network is the exchange of information that is disseminated, discussed and distributed to individuals in the Network.

The organisation of the Network is divided into more centralised nodes, usually with mothers with children from the same school. Common meeting places are situated wherever two or more members congregate regularly for certain activities, examples including parents helping out in a school library to other parent-organised activities.

The need and influence of the Network should never be underestimated. The Network may be used to arrange carpools, clarify doubts about the education, and ultimately the exchange of opinions regarding new or different educational opportunities.

The influence of the Network is perhaps most greatly felt in the primary level of education. Children at this stage are more dependent on their parents, which in turn causes a rise in the need for parents to exchange valuable information regarding their children's studies or other activities. Later, during secondary school, this need is somewhat lessened, and thus the need for the Network becomes more limited.

Due to the unique nature of the Network, conflicts within it are extremely limited and do minimal damage to the Network as a whole. Conflicts usually arise due to actions by a certain member, which others in her immediate circle find to be controversial or unacceptable. Results may vary greatly, ranging from anyway from hidden annoyance to outright alienation of the offending member. Again, as other members have other contacts to communicate with, disruption of the Network is minimal.

The greatest effect of the Network is felt by none other than the long-suffering offspring of the members. The Network has certain benefits for these offspring/students, such as obtaining information about past friends, and obtaining contacts for projects such as Work Attachment and Advanced Enrichment Module.

However, these children often become subject for comparison with other children belonging to other members. For example, if a member has a child who is extraordinately gifted with academic, athetical, musical etc etc abilities, other children have been known to endlessly nagged by their respective parents, who have a sudden realisation that their child "is not making use of their potential".

Whatever ensures, it is certain that the Network will maintain its great influence in the future.

W00t

Who would have thunk?

LDP

Had my LDP project kick off at the children's group my team was assigned to.

Basically I had to tutor them as well as conduct activites to teach them teamwork and leadership.

I found myself tutoring a Primary 5 girl in Maths. And throughout the next few hours, I find myself hoisting it up, down, up again, sideways, in addition to marching all over the parade square.

To my left Sean is drilling the NCC Air. To my right David Chan is belting out the timing for the Scout contingent. The bloody Band are playing extremely loudly and is drowning out the voice of my poor flag commander.

Ooh, and NCC Air goes down to push-up position. However, most of its popularity has been derived from it being a table-top wargame, as well as most recently, a new computer game: Dawn of War.

Basically, it is a futuristic idea of human civilization in the 41s millenium where humanity has been evolved into the "Imperium of Mankind", a dystopian and degenerate galaxy-spanning civilization.

From Daryl's Blog

"The Seven Archangels are supposedly: Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Selaphiel, Jegudiel and Barachiel. They may include : Raguel, Sariel, Remiel, Zadkiel, Jophiel, Haniel, Chamuel and Jarahmeel (some of these are from Jewish tradition). And we also have the fallen - Lucifer."

Check out Wikipedia and just search for "Warhammer 40 000". Ignore the information about the table-top game and just take a look at the background and setting of the story. See if you can spot the similarities between the portrayals of God in Warhammer and reality.

The World has Ended.

Yep. Is not that we are elitist, or that the Express dislike us, I just think that we in GEP are just a tight-knit group and tend to associate more with those in our class and who have been in our class, exactly like the boys from the Express.

And since we have been rotated around 3 classes for the last few years, its no surprise that we have more friends among these classes than in the Express. Naturally, thanks to our CCA, we also have several friends among the Express and get on well with them.

Though they often poke fun at us, I sincerely doubt that any of it is truly malicious in nature. I mean, its just like the ACS-RI thing. Not all of us have actually met someone from RI, but the traditional rivalry always inclines us to make comments about them.

Maybe Jono can tell us what happened at the interviews today, I wonder what everyone said.

My apologies to all who had to endure CNY celebrations today :)

Chinese New Year

I'll be away from tomorrow afternoon until Wednesday as my family is going back to Malaysia for CNY. I have made several post drafts, but have never posted them. Pretty much everytime I have tried to revive my blog, I have given up after I realised that I didn't have much to say.

That, and the fact that I was afraid I would reach a point where blogging would become a chore for me to do. Or worse, something I would do merely for the sake of doing it.

Anyway, I think the best thing to be done right now is to take it day by day. I'll jot down any particularly interesting thoughts, feelings or events that may come my way, as school does provide quite a number of interesting situations. Recently there was the infamous Kluang trip, which I'll write later, yes its old news, but I think its worth recording.

I sincerely hope that my posts will be interesting to you, whether its intended to be humorous or not. I'll take it as a compliment if you badger me to update, but if you find any content to be offensive or anything feel free to email me, and I'll try to keep myself in check. Plus if you think that my posts resemble those of a hyperactive Sec 1 boy, kindly point it out. After I've drowned myself in acid and asked someone to slap me, I'll attempt to improve :)

I don't plan on letting this blog get in the way of my studies, so please understand if I do not update that often. Sometimes my posts need a lot of rewriting and editing before I publish them, so it is pretty time-consuming. *This post has been edited many, many times*

Thats all I have to write down so far, more later with Kluang, right now Math homework takes priority.

Mmhhmmm, with those words you know school's kicked in already.

The angst, the stress, the deadlines, the classroom fights, the complaining, the death threats, the swearing, the "We're all going down together" mentality..........

Don't you just love it?
